XCARET KICKS OFF THE FESTIVAL OF LIFE AND DEATH 2013
Xcaret is well known for its beautiful celebration of Mexican culture and traditions, they have gone so far as to create a new tradition in the Rivirea Maya: to celebrate one of Mexico's most colorful traditions, the Day of the Dead, with the Festival de Tradiciones de Vida y Muerte. Xcaret brings all of the panache, grandeur and folklore that is characteristic of their dazzling productions to this fascinating Mexican holiday.
This year Xcaret showcases the traditions of the Mexican state of Campeche, with its rich history, Mayan traditions and stories of pirates and the seductive Xtabay. (Read more about the Xtabay HERE)
The event was inaugurated with a traditional Mayan ceremony, performed by a local Mayan Shaman followed by a dedication by many important Mexican government officials and, of course, the cutting of the "ribbon" in this case a large string of marigold flowers that are a traditional part of the Day of the Dead celebrations.
This mesmerizing holiday celebration is so intensely moving, colorful, and intriguing that words can not fully convey the true feelings inspired by the flickering candlelight, the delicate beauty of painted Catrinas, the intricate details of the papel picado, the overwhelming scent of chocolate and tamales that lingers in the air, the sense of mystery that presides over the brightly decorated altar, the sounds of music and laughter that intermingle, and the merriment of children and adults like that marvel at the sights and sounds all around.
