Things to have while Snorkeling in Akumal

A former fishing village, Akumal is the hub of fun water sports. The destination is a favorite among scuba divers, honeymooners, families from all over the world. The glorious white coastal strip, beautiful reefs and cenotes for cave diving makes it an excellent place to have all fun under the sun. Akumal as the name means land of turtles in Maya is among the few turtle nesting grounds in the world. Every year from May to October, sea turtles come here to give birth to new lives. This event is of great tourist attraction.

The region is a great place for not only expert but also amateur snorkelers. This is because the water remains calm most of the time. The visibility is such that it is possible to see fishes from the surface. On a windy day there is possibility of the water getting rough but the area around the bay remains fine most of the time.

With such great options one would definitely want to hit the waters and snorkel. However many travelers wonder whether they should buy their own gear or just rent it on the beach. It is always advisable to have one’s personal snorkeling kit. This shall ensure hygiene and proper fit as it makes a major difference in the experience. Fit and comfort are very crucial as a leaky mask is the last thing you want underwater! If you’re renting try on the masks for a proper fit. To check if the mask fits you, push the mask firmly onto your face without the straps. If it sticks to your face then the mask fits you perfectly. Your own snorkel is preferred for hygiene reasons. The mouthpiece of the snorkel should be soft and flexible so that you don’t feel uncomfortable with it in your mouth.

The fins can be rented if one is worried about carrying extra weights but mask and snorkel should definitely be carried along. There are ample of Dive shops from where purchasing and renting can be made. Fins are not an absolute necessity but help you in going down the water quickly.
